The Afro-Latino Education and Arts Collective has partnered with LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes to present the Third Annual Afro-Latino Culture Fest. The Afro-Latino Education and Arts Collective is a nonprofit organization and grassroots effort to uplift and celebrate Afro-Latino individuals. According to their website, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is a “community hub where people gather to celebrate Latinx culture through transformative exhibitions, music, dance, culinary arts, and multigenerational artmaking and storytelling experiences.”
The free event is set to take place on July 19th, from 3 p.m.-11 p.m., at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. They will offer a plethora of food vendors with authentic dishes, and a beer garden with Caribbean-inspired cocktails. They will also have handmade creations and community resources. The family-friendly event will feature several fun activities for all age groups.
The festival hosts Afro-Latino celebrities, filmmakers, scholars, leaders and advocates who participate in engaging discussions on relevant topics such as history, resistance and unity. The event highlights how Afro-Latinos have made an impact in art, literature, politics and social movements. Panelists analyze key moments in history, current obstacles and the ongoing effort to obtain equality and solidarity.
“As our beloved Los Angeles deals with the unconstitutional and inhumane raids throughout our region, LA Plaza remains rooted in purpose, centering the history of Latinx people in Los Angeles and serving as a living testament to the resilience and contributions of our communities,” read a statement on the LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes website. “Now more than ever, we are resolute in our mission to amplify diverse Latinx voices—undocumented, biracial, bicultural, Indigenous, LGBTQIA—and provide a space where Latino culture, history, and connection endure. These are not just words—they are an act of resistance.”
“We are open with a full heart, and we invite you to show up and show out, as only Angelenos can because LA Plaza belongs to you.” The statement concludes, “We love L.A.! ¡Adelante!”
Attend the Afro-Latino Culture Fest to witness the lively spirit and diverse traditions of the Afro-Latino(a)(x) community.
