A march in Switzerland was directed at U.S. President Donald Trump, featuring a brigade of flute players and drummers wearing giant hats in the shape of a hand raising the middle finger.
The anti-Trump parade took place during the annual Fastnacht carnival in Basel, Switzerland. Known for political satire and theatrical costumes, participants throw confetti and poke fun at global events. This year, a viral TikTok showed the marchers mocking Trump.
The video was posted without context, but that didn’t stop social media users from praising the stunt. “Huge fan of whatever this is,” one replied. “As an American I approve this message,” added another.
Many noted that earning the ire of Switzerland, as one user referred to it as “the most neutral country known to man,” was quite a feat. “How on earth do you upset the Swiss????” someone questioned, with others announcing, “Breaking!!!! Switzerland has entered the chat!!” and “It’s official, everyone dislikes Trump.”
People also remarked on the creativity of the demonstration. “From a crafting perspective this is truly incredible,” said one. Another wrote “This is BRILLIANT.”
“The middle fingers playing the flutes took me out,” “Great use of free will and free speech,” and “Getting trolled by flute is some serious gangsta ish,” were among the positive reviews.
Americans in the comments thanked the participants for their protest and apologized on behalf of the country. Others urged their countrymen to do more. “America we aren’t doing enoughhhhh,” another rallied, inspired by the Swiss.
However, not everyone was a fan. Commenters loyal to Trump called the display “vulgar and stupid,” with some accusing Democrats of “hating their country.”
While Switzerland is known for its neutrality, the spectacle highlights Trump’s divisiveness abroad. The Swiss government, however, has emphasized its strong economic ties with the U.S., noting that American markets accounted for nearly 19% of Swiss exports in 2024.
One commenter addressed trade relations between the two nations, joking that “Tomorrow he’s gonna put a tariff on Swiss chocolate and cheese.”
The Fastnacht carnival, held annually between February and March, is ranked among Europe’s top 50 local festivals, blending cultural tradition with sharp political commentary.
