Barack Obama took a swipe at Hispanic voters who may now be facing ICE raids and deportation after voting for Donald Trump on economic issues.
The ex-president shared a series of criticisms about varying groups, including progressives who ‘annoyed America into fascism’ as he was the guest on the final episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.
Obama said the progressives of his presidency ‘were never really tested’ on their views and are now facing challenges, comparing it to how Hispanic voters are facing a different kind of test from federal law enforcement.
‘If you are a Hispanic man, and you’re frustrated about inflation and so you decided, eh, you know what, all that rhetoric about Trump doesn’t matter, I’m just mad about inflation. And now, your sons are being stopped in LA because they look Latino, that’s a test,’ Obama said.
The former president added that Hispanic Americans and progressives were beginning to learn ‘there are consequences to the choices that we’re making.’
‘If you decide not to vote, that’s a consequence,’ he said of the left refusing to vote for Kamala Harris in 2024.
He tried to end on a positive note, saying that there could be some positives for progressives should they battle back from the challenges they currently face.
‘There’s some clarity that’s coming about right now that I wish it’d be great if we weren’t tested this way, but you know what, we probably need to be shaken out of our complacency anyway,’ Obama said.

Obama invited 62-year-old Maron to his Washington office for the last interview.
After much talk on the state of the world, Obama brought it back around to Maron’s farewell.
‘I think we’re going to be OK,’ Obama said. ‘I think part of the reason you had such a big fan base during this 16-year run is there was a core decency to you and the conversations that you had.’
Obama has been making more public appearances and statements of late, many critical of Trump.
Many saw it as a snub last week when Obama refused to name Donald Trump in an astonishing snub to the president as he celebrated the Gaza peace deal.
The Democratic ex-president posted a statement on social media, saying he was ‘relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight.’
But he could not bring himself to name his nemesis Trump, who defied all odds in securing a peace agreement on Wednesday to end the bloody two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas.
‘I’ll finish it for you. “Thank you, Donald Trump,”‘ the president’s son, Don Jr. wrote on social media, mocking Obama’s statement.

Trump had attacked his predecessor in the Oval Office for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for ‘doing nothing’ when asked if he now expected to receive the award.
‘I’ve stopped eight wars, so that’s never happened before — but they’ll have to do what they do. Whatever they do is fine. I know this: I didn’t do it for [the Nobel Peace Prize], I did it because I saved a lot of lives,’ Trump said.
Obama received the prestigious award in 2009, eight months into his first term in a decision that shocked the world.
Even the liberal New York Times said it was ‘very premature’ and argued the Nobel ‘should have a higher bar.’
Obama also recently criticized Trump’s response to his friend Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
He said that Trump and his allies are weaponizing Kirk’s murder to fuel political division and silence opposition.
‘When I hear not just our current president, but his aides, who have a history of calling political opponents “vermin,” enemies who need to be “targeted,” that speaks to a broader problem that we have right now, and something that we’re going to have to grapple with — all of us,’ Obama said.
Although Obama did not mention Trump specifically by name, it was clear he was referencing his successor.
Obama made his remarks during a public event in Erie, Pennsylvania at the annual Jefferson Education Society’s 17th global summit.
‘Barack Hussein Obama is the architect of modern political division in America – famously demeaning millions of patriotic Americans who opposed his liberal agenda as “bitter” for “cling[ing] to guns or religion,”‘ White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told the Daily Mail.
‘Obama used every opportunity to sow division and pit Americans against each other, and following his presidency more Americans felt Obama divided the country than felt he united it. His division has inspired generations of Democrats to slander their opponents as “deplorables,” or “fascists,” or “Nazis.” If he cares about unity in America, he would tell his own party to stop their destructive behavior.’
