Migrant Encounters Drop More Than 40% In June So Far, DHS Says

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is anticipating that border crossings are on track to continue dropping in June as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement.

Concretely, officials said that a little over 5,400 people had been apprehended between June 1 and 22. The figure compares to 9,577 arrests in May, a 43% decrease, according to Border Report.

Moreover, the number of people who managed to cross the border and avoid arrest dropped by half, clocking in at 986 so far this month. The figure was 2,123 in May.

The administration recorded some 37,500 apprehensions since February 1, a more than 90% decrease compared the almost 600,000 that took place during the same period last year under the Biden administration.

Those who entered the country after evading detention also decreased significantly, with 11,867 between February 1 and June 22, compared to more than 94,000 in the same period.

“The world is hearing our message: If you come here illegally, we will find you, arrest you, and deport you. We will not be deterred by the rioters and politicians in our mission to secure America and its border. Migrants are turning back because they know the reality is they will ultimately leave in handcuffs,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
