Why people should celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Fiesta BHAM is the latest Alabama celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, a four-week celebration of Latin American culture, history and contributions across the U.S.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, Birmingham’s Linn Park comes alive from noon to 8 p.m. with Fiesta BHAM, the state’s largest celebration of Hispanic culture.
This family-friendly festival features live music, dance, storytelling, art and food. Fiesta’s mission is to celebrate and educate the public about the diversity within Alabama’s Hispanic communities.
Tickets are $15 in advance, and children 12 and under are admitted free. Proceeds support the Fiesta scholarship fund.
What else is planned for Hispanic Heritage Month?
Celebrate Latin traditions at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. This family-friendly event features bilingual Spanish art activities, hands-on crafts, face painting and a live performance by crowd favorite Orquesta MaCuba. Visitors can also explore the museum’s newly reopened gallery, Ancient American Art.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual observance celebrated in the U.S. from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. It recognizes and celebrates the diverse cultures, histories and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities to the U.S.
Celebrations start on Sept. 15 because it marks the independence days of several Latin American countries, including El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and others. Mexico celebrates its independence on Sept. 16 and Chile celebrates its on Sept. 18.
