A deal orchestrated by a top diplomat from the European Union allowing the flow of resources into the decimated Gaza Strip is hanging by a thread after dozens of Palestinians were killed attempting to access aid over the weekend.
At least 31 people were killed by Israeli Defense Forces, who opened fire at them as they attempted to access aid from a US-supported food distribution point on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, had brokered a deal with the Israeli government to provide safe passage for aid into Gaza and allow Palestinians to access resources as fears of famine rise.
“This deal means more crossings open, aid and food trucks entering Gaza, repair of vital infrastructure and protection of aid workers. We count on Israel to implement every measure agreed,” the former Estonian prime minister stated on Thursday.
However, Palestinians were killed at a food distribution point just three days after the agreement was made. Simultaneously, Israeli airstrikes over the weekend killed another 28 Palestinians which included four children.
Humanitarian organizations are continually blocked from accessing and providing aid to Gaza. Within the last six weeks, about 800 people have been killed at aid distribution centers within the strip, according to the United Nations.
