The film We’re Not Married? tells the story of two couples who find themselves on a romantic weekend getaway and decide to get married – only to find out years later that they are not actually married!
The main cast includes Lisa Vidal (Third Watch, I Like it Like That, Being Mary Jane), Eric Roberts (Runaway Train), Danielle Larracuente (Bosch: Legacy, Snowfall, This Is Us, This Is Me… Now), Phillip Smithey (Murderville, Johnson), Joey Nisivoccia (How to Date a Vampire, Evil Touch), and Juliah Cheree Taylor.
In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, the film premiered in LA with a cast that features mostly Latino characters, which shows that Latino representation is possible on the big screen.
Director and writer Cynthia Garcia Williams said the main process is learning to trust herself. She said, “I looked on the screen when we were filming and there were all different shades of brown, all Latinos, and I got moved to see that, I think that’s what I’m supposed to be doing.”
The main character in the film Rachel, played by Danielle Larracuente, highlights an upcoming Latina influencer, and talks about the Latina taboos and stereotypes, when it comes to finding a career and the right relationship, with all the family pressures.
Danielle said that having her culture portrayed in the movie was very empowering, and just being able to play the lead in a rom-com as a Latina. “I feel really blessed, and I’m so excited and I think it’s an important movie for everyone to see,” she said. “It’s the perfect timing, and I think we need more of this.”
The male lead Julian, played by Philip Smithey, brings up the relationship challenges they face in their 10-year marriage, from moving in together to going to therapy and everything in between. “I love the fact to have this film premiere during Latin Heritage Month, to celebrate the culture and diversity of these stories,” he said. The actors said they shared many intimate moments on set, including their love of wearing “crocs” in between takes.
Lisa Vidal, who is part of the cast and is one of the founders of “Latinas Acting Up” along with Diana-Maria Riva, which supports Latinas in the entertainment industry, talked about the importance of more Latino roles in Hollywood.
“I think it’s really important that this was the month that it came out, that was not by accident,” Vidal said. “I went to college, but I still got problems…I think it’s important, I think we’re here and we need a lot more of these movies.”
Vidal said she never really saw those kinds of roles represented in film growing up, seeing Latinos who have a career, married, going to therapy and it’s important to show that diversity within the Latino community.
We’re Not Married? premiered on September 19, 2024 at Harmony Gold Theater in Hollywood.
