Taqueria Super Macho
You’ve likely visited this Black Sheep Mexican mainstay. It is known for its laid-back atmosphere, graphic-printed exposed walls and bright neon lights. It is also well-loved for its convivial atmosphere. The après-surf taco bar has only one simple request for patrons: to kick back, relax and enjoy a great evening with even greater food from Chilean-born chef Billy Otis. The energy at this taco joint is unserious and casual yet vibrant. If there’s ever a place that encourages you to get your (sanitised) hands dirty from an overflowing taco, this is it. Throwback three cocktails too many —the daiquiris and Paloma are easy downers—and join in the next wave of a hearty hollering of “Tequila!”
What to order: Grilled Chicken Tostada (HKD 128), Charcoal-grilled Mexican Street Corn (HKD 98), Crispy Fish Taco (HKD 48)
Tip: We recommend visiting on the first two days of the week for Taco Monday and Tuesday so you can enjoy even more promotions and discounts.

11 Westside needs no introduction, especially since it’s the brainchild of chef Esdras Ochoa, better yet known as ‘Taco King’. He also appeared on Netflix’s cooking show The Final Table so he’s a bit of a celebrity. Naturally, the corn tortilla-wrapped packages are the stars of the show here, all hand-made with jet-fresh ingredients from Mexico and authentic recipes. Ones to look out for when you pay a visit: the table-side guacamole and a pick n’ mixed selection of generous tacos. The Baja Fish and Al Pastor are among the bestsellers.
What to order: Al Pastor (HKD 50), Baja Fish Taco (HKD 60), Bone Marrow Luge (HKD 198), Yellowtail Ceviche (HKD 188)
Tip: Make sure to order drinks crafted by beverage master Daniel Eun such as Rose Clique (HKD 110) and Last Time I Checc’d (HKD 130).

Enter your new favourite spot for Mexican comfort food: El Taquero. The cosy 45-eatery nestled on the corner of Ship Street and Queen’s Road East takes its name from the Spanish description for ‘the taco vendor’. By day, the restaurant is a delightful lunch option and at night it transitions into a post-work tippling joint. The interiors amplify the vibe even further, with matching neon signs and eye-catching interiors that pay homage to modern taqueros across Mexico City. Chef Alejandro Ramirez Perez offers a menu showcasing regional dishes using traditional Mexican cooking techniques, especially from the regions of Hidalgo, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Mexico City. Yes, it can’t get any more diverse and authentic.
The real showstopper at El Taquero? The Al Pastor. It’s a dish with thinly sliced marinated pork, slow cooked on the ‘trompo,’ a vertically rotating spit rotisserie. Even among Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong, this one is top-notch. They use a cooking method that draws inspiration from the traditional shawarma brought to Mexico in the 1800s by Lebanese immigrants.
What to order: Taco Al Pastor (HKS 48) or the Al Pastor Experience (HKD276 for 300g or HKD 360 for 500g), Fish Sayulita (HKD 56), Lengua (HKD 48), Tuna Tostadas (HKD 62), Tiger Prawns Al Ajillo (HKD 248 for three, HKD 348 for five)
Tip: El Taquero has a dedicated bar serving up amazing tequilas and mezcals for a true Mexican drinking experience. So, try a shot of these Mexican spirits with a traditional chaser.

Uncle Miguel is the new kid on the block—in Peel Street, a trendy spot in Central with rows and rows of bars and restaurants. But Uncle Miguel holds its own, offering a cosy respite and a wide range of Mexican delights. The menu is short but sweet, so you don’t really have to scratch your head around on what to order. It’s simple and no-fuss but still good. You can’t go wrong with the nachos, the ultimate Mexican comfort food and the homemade corn tortillas. So, prepare your hands to get dirty with finger-licking goodness. The Nopales Tacos is one of a kind: made of cactus. Rare so it’s definitely worth a try.
What to order: Nachos (HKD 148), Elote (HKD 78), Ceviche (HKD 128), Nopales Tacos (HKD 78)
Tip: As it’s located in Peel Street, we recommend coming here for some snacks, unless you prefer a meal. Or better yet, once you have too much to drink, grab some Mexican comfort food here. While the atmosphere is cosy, it’s not your go-to for a date spot.

What makes a good Mexican cantina? When you find yourself not only returning for its boozy tequila-based tipples but also the tacos and nachos and guacamole and chips. The list continues. Te Quiero Mucho is a place like such. With head chef Eric Rodriguez, a native of Mexico, at its helm, you know you’re in for a good dining experience. This energetic eatery serves an endless selection of Mexican beers. Add the zingy cocktails made with the in-house selection of artisanal tequilas and mezcal, and very real, very delicious Mexican serves. The menu is more than just food, it also reflects stories of Mexico’s rich culinary heritage.
What to order: Guacamole & Chips (HKD 128), Crab Tostada (HKD 68), Gringa de Pastor (HKD 78), Whitexican Nachos (HKD 158), Braised Short Ribs (HKD 188)
Tip: Te Quiero Mucho has a lunch and brunch menu on top of an a la carte menu. We recommend going for the lunch options on weekdays and brunch on weekends. The a la carte is a better option if you’re dining in large groups to try a bit more of everything. Chicano took over the spot of Gough’s on Gough on Gough Street… phew, that’s a mouthful. This Mexican cantina is the brainchild of founders Gabe Pérez and chef Edgar Vigo. As its name suggests, the Latino duo wanted to bring LA-influenced Mexican food to Hong Kong, backed by timeless recipes from chef Vigo’s Mexican grandmother. So, expect a warm and cosy atmosphere on top of dishes made with extra love. Prepare your tastebuds for an explosion of flavours, from the classic tacos to the hot Camarones a la Dibla to the comforting tamales.

Off the far end of Third Street in Sai Ying Pun is El Macho. Likely to be lesser known than some other big players on this list, it’s by no means elusive and unassuming. Not at all. Matching a similarly loud and boisterous energy of traditional roadside taquerias, this buzzy neighbourhood spot ups the antes with striking Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) décor, meaning bright zingy neons, larger-than-life murals that wrap around the outer walls and a ceiling lined with colourful sombreros.
The menu serves just as bold, extravagant plates such as nacho loaded up with mountainous toppings and cheese. Don’t forget the generously stuffed tacos that lean and spill onto one other. If you think that was impressive, the servers will dress up in wide-brimmed sombreros and matching ponchos, too. All in the name of a good time. The only thing missing is the cheery strums from an animated mariachi band.
What to order: Pulled Pork Nachos (HKD 148), El Carnisada (HKD 98), Diced Chicken Quesadillas (HKD 118), Iberico Tenderloin (HKD 168)
Tip: The set lunch is worth it if you’re around the area. You have options such as a burrito bowl, taco (three pieces), or a half quesadilla. You can also add a drink for a few dollars available on weekdays from 12 pm to 4 pm.

A taste of Tex-Mex is what Caliente is serving. We’re talking cheesy quesadillas, sizzling fajita plates and some very tasty chicken chimichangas. There are tacos too but the broad menu will make you want to venture a little further past the average corn-tortilla bite. However, it’s worth noting some unconventional takes on the classic taco. The Taco Bomb is a hefty number comprised of an indulgent fusion of foie gras, sea urchin and fatty tuna. Nobody said tacos had to be simple. Drinks-wise, the menu is as extensive as ever. Take a gander and take a sip; it’s the start of a fun yet long evening.
What to order: Fajita Combo (HKD 192), Chimichanga Beef (HKD 158), Taco Combo (HKD 168 for three and HKD 198 for five), Caliente Wings (HKD 92)
Tip: Caliente has a good happy hour menu, so we recommend coming in a little early even if you think 5 pm or 6 pm is too early for dinner.

What you see is what you get at this cosy Sai Ying Pun taqueria. No fuss and no frills, just an honest serving of tasty Mexican favourites. Not to mention it’s one of superb value too. What you get are generous plates that you’ll still be munching through at lunch the next day, with very affordable price tags (words we love to hear). Sweep through the gargantuan menu of quesadillas, tacos, and margaritas. And oh the margs! Never to be forgotten, especially since it’s hammered in bright green letters, right next to ‘Taco’ atop the storefront. Taco Chaca is a favourite among many, so pop over when you can.
What to order: Chipotle Fries (HKD 96), Pico de Gallo (HKD 60), Dodger Stadium Taco (HKD 78), Monster Nachos (HKD 125)
Tip: As the space is pretty small, we recommend coming with a small group of two or three. Don’t forget to try the different sauces as well—they have an entire shelf dedicated to it in case you’re impressed and want to purchase a few.
